Wait! Don’t start yet! Put some –appropriate- music on first!
I visited the island of Sifnos in late June for THE wedding of the year! Not mine, -Thank God! -, the wedding of a friend couple. When 2 crazy, adventurous and non mainstream friends of mine are getting married, I know in advance that this event will be a true experience and I would not miss it even if the sun rose from the west and Khal Drogo resurrected! This trend nowadays that marriages are combined with holidays, is consistent with my wandering soul, so the first weekend of this year’s holiday, I walked every beautiful corner of this Cycladic paradise!
I chose a hotel befitting the occasion (I am this kind of person!), -romantic with a traditional touch- and completely by chance (damn, I did not play the lottery!) it was really close to the hotel of the newlyweds; from where an entire troupe of musicians with their instruments (starring groom and the best man), would stand outside the window of the bride, singing and calling her to come out and then all together, with live music being played in the background, to take the road to the St. Catherine church, on the mountain. I fact, we would walk, while the groom with the bride are riding a pink scooter (yes my friends are this kind of persons)!

Sifnos, according to mythology is the island of Apollo and so the Olympian God adorned with countless beauties and an authenticity that oozes from every village, every alley, every whitewashed church (235 in total please!). There is no month on Sifnos that does not celebrate any of the chapels or monasteries and Sifnians always follow customs and rituals…celebrating! One could say that in this place, time stops while you stand at the beginning of the path, leading to the church of Seven Martyrs at “Kastro” and the atmosphere captures you, transmitting something from a movie or from the charm of a bygone era…
“Kastro” was the capital of Sifnos until 1836, and in 1962 was declared a protected archaeological site and a traditional settlement, maintained largely unchanged until today. For me is the best ride on Sifnos, this unique architecture with two-storey and three-storey houses, oblong, like a wall and roofed gates, called “lodzies”. The next best ride is the “steno” of Apollonia for the beautiful Cycladic colors of the shops and because there you can meet the whole island!

The island of Tselementes is a “tasty” beauty for both the eye and the stomach (do not miss eating the famous caper salad)! The Sifnians are famous for their celebrations, their cooking and the art of pottery. Three characteristics that still perceive you even if you spend only three days on the island. And although the beaches are not very special, -in relation to the Greek high standards-, the sea is a real dream with crystal clear water (don’t miss diving from the rocks of Chrisopigi Church)! Just three days were enough to fill the memory card of my camera with a thousand photos, a fact that is equivalent to one million words! So I think there is not anything else to say, other than to get lost again in these pictures, hoping to be able to take you with me!
